- Abstract
An essay is presented which discusses the U.S. Republican presidential candidate (and later president) Ronald Reagan's referencing of race in his rhetoric during the 1976 and 1980 U.S. presidential campaigns. An overview of Reagan's claim to support states' rights, including in regard to his alleged effort to gain political support from Southern white voters who were resentful at desegregation efforts, which provided African Americans with civil rights, is provided.
