- Abstract
The article discusses the China City and New Chinatown neighborhoods of Los Angeles, California. It is suggested that architectural critics have overlooked the historical complexity of these neighborhoods, dismissing them as inauthentic commercial spaces designed only for tourists. According to the author, the neighborhoods illustrate the complex relationship between the established Chinese immigrant community and the modernizing city of Los Angeles during the 1930s. Details on the city's original Chinatown neighborhood and on the roles of cultural history, symbolism, and self-branding in the design of the neighborhoods are presented. Other topics include the Plaza district of Los Angeles and the art installation "Chinatownland" by Andre Yi and Annie Shaw.
