- Abstract
The article outlines steps for preparing patients with serious mental illness (SMI) for heat waves. Factors that increase SMI risk include thermoregulatory dysfunction and use of antipsychotics and anticholinergics. Ways that psychiatrists can keep patients safe include helping the health care system where they work, educating patients and caregivers, assessing personalized heat-related risks and teaching patients, caregivers and staff signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
