- Abstract
The article explores the endosymbiotic origin of cell organelles. It cites the origin and evolution of mitochondria and chloroplasts. It explains the central processes governing the endosymbiont-organelle transition. It also discusses the different requirements that have to be met to achieve the successful integration of the endosymbiotic organelles into the host cell.
