Aim of the study: Analysis of the kind and frequency of exposure to potentially infectious material in children and the effect of postexposure prophylaxis. Materials and methods: The retrospective study included thirty five children hospitalized in the Department of Infectious Dis- eases and Child Neurology in Poznañ University of Medical Sciences after exposure for potentially infectious material. Results: In 200 1-2009 the number of people admitted after exposure to infectious material was growing. Twenty six patients had accidental needlestick injury. Nine children were intentionally exposed. Thirty children got postexposure pharmacological prophy- laxis. None of them was infected by HBV, HCV, and HIV. Conclusion: Education about the risks and handling of accidentally found medical material is an important method of prophylaxis in childhood.
