- Abstract
The author explores the cultural production of images of U.S. Southwest as emblematic of the American frontier and as popular sites of adventure recreation and travel for the middle classes. The author relates that the distinctive landscapes of the Colorado Plateau have been especially effective because they easily represent the American West of the nation's patriotic imagination. It is represented in popular renderings of the frontier and have become thoroughly entangled in national memories.
