- Abstract
ADDICTIVE DISORDERS ARE HIGHLY PREVALENT PSYCHIATRIC DISORDERS AND HAVE A MASSIVE SOCIO-ECONOMIC IMPACT. THE COLLABORATIVE ANTWERP PSYCHIATRIC RESEARCH INSTITUTE (CAPRI) HAS DEDICATED ITSELF TO PERFORM RESEARCH ON ADDICTION AS WELL AS TO EXPAND THE KNOWLEDGE REGARDING THE PATHOGENESIS AND TREATMENT FOR THIS PATIENT GROUP. IN THIS REVIEW, THREE MAJOR TOPICS IN ADDICTION RESEARCH WILL BE DISCUSSED: IMPULSIVITY, COMORBIDITY, AND TREATMENT. RESEARCH PERFORMED BY CAPRI HAS BROUGHT TO LIGHT DIFFERENT DETERMINANT OF IMPULSIVE BEHAVIOR IN SUBSTANCE USE DISORDERS (SUDS). ONE OF THESE BEING COMORBIDITY OF PSYCHIATRIC DISORDERS, WHICH IS HIGHLY PREVALENT, BUT INSUFFICIENTLY STUDIED. SEVERAL OTHER CAPRI RESEARCH PROJECTS ALSO ADDRESS COMORBIDITY AND/OR TREATMENT. REGARDING TREATMENT OF SUD, PREDICTORS OF RELAPSE AS WELL AS THE EFFICACY OF MODAFINIL (A PHARMACOLOGICAL AGENT) HAVE BEEN STUDIED.
