- Abstract
The article discusses the genesis of dermatology in Melbourne, Victoria. The ferment that was taking place in business, industry, and the arts, was evident in medicine. At the suggestion of students, and by vote of contributors, William Moore-demonstrator in anatomy at Melbourne University was appointed in October, 1885, as Surgeon in charge of a new branch which it was proposed to establish in connection with the Melbourne Hospital, for the treatment of skin diseases. The by-laws of the hospital did not allow for appointments to specialist departments until October 1902, when an Advisory Committee appointed Herman Lawrence the first dermatologist to the Melbourne Hospital.
