- Abstract
Solar energy has a significant advantage over other forms of renewable energy, that is its geographic availability. Another important advantage is the possibility of conversion directly into electricity. Photovoltaic panel is a full-fledged technology that develops continuously breaking records in the conversion efficiency and cost effectiveness. New types of faults that reduce the power output emerge as the photovoltaic conversion technology advances. Hence, the maintenance framework must be continuously updated and new fault-detection techniques must be identified. This two-part paper discusses the most frequently encountered fault types that cause the decrease of the photovoltaic panels power output. In the second part of the paper, a computer vision and machine learning approach are proposed to detect some types of failures in photovoltaic panels.
