- Abstract
This research deals with the reality of the Sufi movement in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, during the past century and until the present time, by reviewing the main Sufi Schools, their methods, and their lodges, with reference to their history, most important principles and notable-figures, in addition to their geographic distribution in the city and their most important activities and events in it. The research also deals with examples of influential Sufi figures, men and women, who had a prominent role in preserving, sponsoring and supporting Baghdadi Sufism. While the research reveals the most important social and artistic effects of the Sufi movement in Medina. On the one hand it clarifies the role played by Sufism in preserving the cohesion of society, highlighting its civilized identity, and consolidating its moral and spiritual values and norms. The research also tackles some of the cultural, literary and musical effects of the contemporary Sufi movement, by reviewing its manifestations in poetry, music and songs as creative fields, or in cultural and scientific conferences and forums. To end by clarifying the importance of Islamic Sufism and the roles it plays in contemporary Iraqi life, and its relationship to the features that have characterized Islamic Sufi thought and philosophy throughout history, especially its ability to achieve balance between the spiritual and material aspects of societies, in addition to its ability to reconcile tradition and modernity.
