- Abstract
The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared an outbreak of mpox clade I as a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC). This outbreak is different from the previous one, as it involves a new subvariant called clade Ib and has a higher case fatality rate. The current outbreak has spread to several countries in Africa and has the potential to spread further. Asia, with its densely populated cities and connected populations, faces challenges in controlling the spread of the virus. However, mpox is not transmitted through respiratory means like COVID-19, and public health measures should focus on sexual transmission and close physical contact. Asian countries are ramping up their preparedness by enhancing surveillance, improving community awareness, and prioritizing vaccine use. It is important to recognize that mpox is a different pathogen from COVID-19 and to adapt public health measures accordingly.
