- Abstract
The essay investigates and deepens the production of Carlo Crivelli’s major works in the early years of the eighth decade of the 15th century. In the series of polyptychs for Porto San Giorgio, Fermo, Ascoli Piceno and Montefiore dell’Aso, a rapid stylistic evolution is evident that leads the painter to decisively abandon the memories of his contact with Schiavone and to encounter a new culture of light that can be defined as Central Italian. An evolution that also forces one to rethink the date of the Montefiore polyptych, which is proposed to fall around 1475. The essay also investigates the position of the works within their original contexts, whenever possible: the polyptych of San Domenico in Fermo most likely comes from the Paccaroni altar, which must have been leaning against the head of the right transept, while the polyptych of the Ascoli Cathedral, destined for the high altar, was probably leaning against the bottom of the apse before the reconstruction work in the mid-16th century.
