- Abstract
The quarantine imposed due to the Covid-19 pandemic marked the beginning of a dynamic that brought together four elements from the underworld of illegality: drug trafficking, illegal mining, deforestation, and the seizure of indigenous lands. This combination escalated violence, mistreatment of indigenous peoples, and even the murder of indigenous defenders. The State perpetuates this extractivist dynamic through laws favoring deforestation and the expansion of crops in the Amazon, acting in collusion with illegal actors and further entrenching the dependence on the illicit sector, which claims vast areas of the country. The expansion of extraction borders is often driven by settlers seeking new opportunities through the illegal cultivation of coca leaves or in service of large agro-industrial companies. Breaking free from this spiral of violence will be challenging as long as extractive regimes remain in power. Empowering indigenous communities stands as an alternative for defending their territories.
