- Abstract
The article profiles Professor Martha Derthick of the University of Virginia. A native of Cleveland, Ohio, Derthick graduated from Hiram College in 1954 and tben earned a masters degree from Radcliffe College. After two years in the federal government as an executive trainee in the Office of the Secretary of Defense and a historian in the Joint Chiefs of Staff, she returned to Radcliffe for a doctor of philosophy in government that was granted in 1962. She also held research appointments at the Joint Center for Urban Studies of Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Harvard and the Brookings Institution, where she was director of Governmental Studies from 1978 to 1983. Derthick has published numerous books in the fields of public administration, public policy, and intergovernmental relations, among which the best known are Policymaking for Social Security, The Politics of Deregulation, and Agency under Stress: The Social Security Administration in American Government. In addition to the Waldo Award, her honors include membership in the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the Radcliffe Graduate Society medal, an honorary degree from Colgate University, the Kammerer Award and the Gaus Award of the American Political Science Association.
