- Abstract
The article discusses the use of endoscopic third ventriculostomy (ETV) as a treatment for obstructive hydrocephalus in children with posterior fossa tumors. ETV has been proven to be safe and effective, allowing for the management of hydrocephalus without the need for a shunt. The success rate of ETV varies depending on the histology of the tumor, with lower success rates observed in medulloblastomas and ependymomas. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is used to verify the success of ETV, but early postoperative MRI may not always accurately show the flow through the ventriculostomy. In these cases, seriate lumbar punctures can be used to promote ETV patency. Overall, early verification of ETV patency can be challenging, and further research is needed in this area.
