Describes two independent investigations by local health departments, assisted by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, into outbreaks of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) skin infection among otherwise healthy, full-term newborns delivered at hospitals in Chicago, Illinois, and Los Angeles County, California in 2004. Details of the findings of an investigation by the Chicago Department of Public Health in October; Discussion on the MRSA cases investigated into by the Los Angeles County Department of Health Services in January and June; Implications of the findings.
