- Abstract
Listeriosis is a foodborne bacterial illness that can be very serious and fatal among immunocompromised, the elderly, neonates and pregnant women. Listeriosis is implicated in sporadic cases and outbreaks worldwide. The genus Listeria contains some species, one of which is pathogenic such as L. monocytogenes that causes severe illnesses both in humans and in animals. L. monocytogenes is characterized as a Grampositive, facultative anaerobic, non-encapsulated, non-sporulating, motile and intracellular bacillus. Transmission of listeria occurs mainly through consumption of contaminated food. L. monocytogenes is a genetically heterogeneous species divided into different serotypes and phylogenetic lineages. In this work, we summarize the serotypes and lineages of this bacterial species.
