- Title
Waterbirth -- an international overview.
- Authors
Garland, Dianne
- Abstract
The article presents an update on the practice of waterbirth. Japan is a highly technological country which has nevertheless seen a resurgence in home birth where the expectant mother gives birth in the midwife's own home. It is noted that one of the problems in expanding access to waterbirth for women in the U.S. is the struggle with bureaucracy and the high litigation levels associated with maternity practice. Some of the issues that midwives will consider are cultural influences, education and professional codes of practice and professional rivalry.
