- Abstract
Human herpesviruses are DNA viruses that can cause acute or chronic infections, some asymptomatic and others very severe, such as herpes encephalopathy. Some of these viruses, such as Epstein-Barr virus, are associated with malignant processes. Several antiviral drugs are available to manage acute and chronic human herpesvirus infections, with acyclovir being the most widely used. Immunization with live attenuated chickenpox vaccine is indicated for children older than 9 months and for other unimmunized persons. Another vaccine with live attenuated varicella-zoster virus is used to prevent shingles and postherpetic neuralgia in patients over 50 years of age.
