- Title
CANON AND SPEECH ACT: LIMITATIONS IN SPEECH-ACT THEORY, WITH IMPLICATIONS FOR A PUTATIVE THEORY OF CANONICAL SPEECH ACTS.
- Authors
POYTHRESS, VERN SHERIDAN
- Abstract
The article discusses the speech-act theory, its application as well as limitations in biblical interpretation. Developed by John Austin and John Searle to examine language as a function of human action, the theory classifies speech into various types, such as that of declaration, command, or question. While the author acknowledges that the theory adds another dimension to understanding language and human action, he advises that the method is limited as a tool for obtaining philosophical wisdom from Scripture.
