- Title
Contact cheilitis from propyl gallate in lipstick.
- Abstract
The article presents a case study of a 23-year-old presented with darkening, scaling and slight swelling of her lower lip for 15 days. She had discontinued the Lakme Primrose 315 lipstick that she had been using for the last 2 months and applied white petrolatum with improvement, but the pigmentation had persisted. 15 days later, she reused the lipstick, with exacerbation of cheilitis. She was patch tested with a cosmetics series, using Van der Bend chambers and reading according to ICDRG recommendations. She was positive to propyl gallate 1% pet., octyl gallate 0.25% pet., and her lipstick. Lipsticks may contain many allergens, including eosin, castor oil, ricinokic acid, photoprotective agents such as oxybenzone, lanolin, perfumes, and antioxidants such as propyl gallate.
