The article focuses on contact allergy to nicotine from a nicotine patch. Nicotine is a transdermal therapeutic system, nicotine patch has recently been widely introduced to help people to stop smoking. This way of delivering pharmacologically active substances may cause adverse dermatological reactions. Reported cutaneous side effects from nicotine patches include irritation, pharmacological effects and contact allergy, particularly to nicotine. The frequency of nicotine allergy among nicotine patch users in Sweden is not known. One study showed that 5/83 persons investigated developed contact allergy to nicotine from the patches. An aqueous solution of nicotine base has been suggested as the best way to identify contact allergy.
