- Title
Allergic contact dermatitis due to garlic (Allium sativum).
- Abstract
This article presents information on allergic contact dermatitis due to garlic. Garlic, or allium sativum, is a vegetable of the Alliaceae family widely used in cooking in southern Italy. It has been found to be a contact sensitizer due to the presence of diallyl disulphide. Allergic contact dermatitis from garlic is clinically characterized by desquamation and hyperkeratosis of the palmer surface of the hands. An aczematous pattern is sometimes observed in the initial phase of the disease. Housewives, cooks, farmers and greengrocers are all at risk of sensitization.
