- Abstract
The article focuses on research which was done on invasive pneumococcal disease in children in eight states in the U.S. between 1998 and 2005, five years after the introduction of a conjugate vaccine. The research, which was conducted by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, found that the introduction of the vaccine led to a substantial reduction in invasive pneumococcal disease among vaccinated children and also led to a reduction of the disease among unvaccinated children through a reduction in disease transmission.
