- Abstract
This study examined a cylinder-shaped altar with embossed figures found in Keramos which had never been scientifically studied before. There are four curved garlands held by bull heads on the cylinder-shaped body of the altar and five standing relief figures within a schematized niche with a rectangular frame under the curve. These embossed figures provide interesting information regarding the meaning and use of the altar. Among these figures, the husband and wife figure wearing himation on chiton is studied within the dexiosis iconography in the funerary art while the female figure to the left of them is studied within the type of Pudicitia Philista. There are also maiden figures on the right and left corners of the relief area, which are smaller than the main figures. The present figures indicate that this altar is part of a tomb which belongs to an important person. After the alter was compared with other patterns from similar periods in terms of its form, workmanship, type, style, and iconography of its figures, it was concluded, within the scope of this study, that this altar was created in the last quarter of the 2nd century B.C.
