- Title
Re-imagining Bleeders: The Medical Leech in the Nineteenth Century Bloodletting Encounter.
- Authors
KIRK, ROBERT G. W.; PEMBERTON, NEIL
- Abstract
The article discusses the role of medical leeches in bloodletting in the nineteenth century. It comments on conceptualizations of leeches as both living beings and medical tools, noting that they were sometimes perceived as having human-like qualities such as sympathy and sociability. The authors reflect on the leech industry and leecheries, or ponds specifically used for the mass production of leeches. Other topics include differences between horse leeches and medical leeches and French military surgeon François-Joseph-Victor Broussais.
