- Title
The Battalion That Never Was: Dr. Teofil Starzyński, the OSS, and the Polish American Special Service Unit Project, 1942.
- Authors
Szymczak, Robert
- Abstract
The article focuses on the author's quest to know why the idea for an all-Polish American special unit within the U.S. Army during World War II was abandoned. The idea was broached by U.S. Colonel William J. Donovan's Office of the Coordinator of Information (COI), which was soon to become the Office of Strategic Services. The project appears to have been of high importance, but after months of preparation, it was eliminated. The author states that the reasons for its abrupt ending are not clear. Also discussed is the role of Teofil Starzynski, president of the Polish Falcons of America, as chief recruiter for the special operation.
