- Abstract
Objective: The aim of the study was to study the prevalence of red blood cell (RBC) alloantibody among regular blood donors and determine the specificities of the identified antibodies. Materials and Methods: This prospective study was conducted among 500 regular blood donors in our hospital. Blood samples were subjected to standard blood bank procedure for screening of antibodies and subsequent antibodies identification. The antibody identification test was performed by a commercial RBC panel when the antibody screening test was positive. Results: The prevalence of RBC alloantibody was found to be 0.8% (four out of 500) among the blood donors. Anti-"Mia" was found in three cases (two female and one male) and anti Lea and Leb were found in one case. Three of them were Malay and one of them is Chinese in origin. Conclusion: The rate of alloimmunization among the blood donors in our hospital was low.
