- Authors
Cureton, Thomas Kirk; Barry, Alan J.
- Abstract
The article discusses the physical effects of gymnastics in the physical fitness of boys. The long-range effects of gymnastics on the posture and other direct over-all effects is evaluated by measuring changes in the physique, circulatory-respiratory efficiency and motor fitness of the subjects. The study revealed that the effects on the physique included significant reductions of fatty tissue, increase in chest breadth, hip width, chest depth and ankle girth. The leg strength was also increased by the tumbling and trampoline program. The subjects gained height more rapidly than average. Gymnastic programs had slight improvement on motor fitness but no significant effect on the cardiovascular condition of the subjects.
