- Abstract
On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Bayerischer Presseclub, an asociation of Catholic journalists in Bavaria, the author delivered an analysis of the development of Church communication in Germany since the end of World War II. At that time Church print media had a very good position. The Churches were well represented in public service broadcasting companies as well. However, in the following years the content of Church media and the expectations of the people developed in different directions. Circulation of Church papers went steadily down. Vatican II and the Synod of German dioceses showed a Church open to dialog. The structures of public communication changed more quickly and rapidly as Church media could realise because they were bound to certain fundamental structures of the Church which could not adopt the secular media rule of fullfilling the expectations of the people. Moreover, the example of „Media Pope” John Paul II. showed that the Church is not depending on own media to always be represented in public. However, while common secular media are more and more loosing their reliability and often present fakes, the strength of Church media remains their credibility.
