- Title
"Spinning the Code: Opus Dei,' and Religious Public Relations"
- Authors
Badaracco, Claire Hoertz
- Abstract
The article discusses the media spin put out by the Catholic Church and the affiliated Catholic organization Opus Dei preceding the 2006 movie release of Ron Howard's "The Da Vinci Code" based on the novel by Dan Brown. In an era of religious fundamentalism, the Catholic Church made a brilliant public relations move to use the upcoming event as a catalyst for discussion of what it means to be Catholic and what the book and/or the movie got wrong. They used talk shows and web sites to reach Catholics about information about their faith.
