- Abstract
It was 1820 when the Hispanist Lord Holland published a booklet on the supression of the Jesuits from Hispanic monarchy’s territories, an order decreed in 1767 by Carlos III. Although it was an event that shocked Seventeenth-century Europe it is striking it was published 53 years after the banishment of those regulars of the Society of Jesus, what verified that even then, those events aroused genuine interest. Our intention in this article is to outline this noble Englishman profile, a passionate man about Spanish culture and politics, along with the Elizabeth VassalFox, well-known traveller and diarist; the relationships that linked this couple with relevant figures close to the Spanish court and contrast the opinions that both present about the expulsion of these religious and the consequences for Spain of their exile, ending with an approximation of the possible circumstances that led him to publish his manuscript precisely on that date.
