- Abstract
The medal, kept in the National Museum of History of Moldova, is part of the collection of the famous soil scientist Nikolai Dimo, who was awarded it in 1949 for a series of scientific works in the field of soil science. The medal was acquired in 1988 from the descendants of the scientist. The V. Dokuchaev Medal is a scientific award of the Russian Academy of Sciences, established in 1946 on the 10th anniversary of the birth of V. V. Dokuchaev (1846-1903), a Russian scientist, geographer and geologist, founder of the Russian school of soil science, professor of mineralogy and crystallography at St. Petersburg University, known for his research on chernozems in the Russian Empire, including the Bessarabian Governorate. The author of the medal is Samuil Lvovich Tulchinsky (1900-1981), a Soviet sculptor, engraver, creator of many works in the field of medalistics. It is made of gold 583, weight 112.45 g, diameter 50 mm. On the obverse there is a bust full-face portrait of the scientist, made according to a photograph depicting him in his mature years, along the circumference there is an inscription: В.В. ДОКУЧАЕВ * ЗА ВЫДАЮЩИЕСЯ РАБОТЫ В ОБЛАСТИ ПОЧВОВЕДЕНИЯ * / V.V. DOKUCHAEV * FOR OUTSTANDING WORKS IN THE FIELD OF SOIL SCIENCE *. The emblem of the Soviet Union is depicted on the reverse in the center, below – two laurel branches. The inscription “USSR” is located between the emblem and laurel branches. The V. Dokuchaev Medal is unique. It was released in a single copy and has great historical, memorial and artistic value.
