- Abstract
This paper describes funeral equipment from Mastaba D 208. The equipment found in this tomb, in considerable numbers, consists of a range of objects already known from Old Kingdom elite tombs. The finds of Mastaba D 208, related to two funerals found during the excavations undertaken by Georg Steindorff in Giza's West Cemetery, are described and placed in the context of other objects, or depictions of them, from other tombs. The objects under consideration here contain elements signifying regeneration (broad collar, click beetle, papyrus and scents of unguents) that are well known from Dynastic Egypt. The article compares the symbols and aspects connected with the objects with passages taken from Pyramid Texts. The functions and ideas expressed by these spells support the assumption that the tomb equipment discussed in this article, and tomb equipment in general - mainly model cosmetic vessels and jewelry - is not personal equipment or gifts for use in the afterlife, nor necessarily gender-specific, but that it rather serves to provide rejuvenation and regeneration to the tombs' owners, in a manner well known from the Pyramid Texts.
