- Abstract
The article discusses the glycobiology of syndecan-1 (Sdc1), a major cell surface heparan sulfate (HS) proteoglycan of epithelial cells, in bacterial infections. Subversion of Sdc1 is considered as important virulence strategy due to gain-of-function mutation that decreases the susceptability to bacterial infections. Inhibition of innate immune mechanisms result from select HS sulfate motifs.
