- Title
Statius, Orpheus, and Callimachus Thebaid 2.269-96.
- Authors
CHINN, CHRISTOPHER MATTHEW
- Abstract
The article discusses Statius's description of a necklace made by Vulcan in book 2 of the Thebaid as it alludes to the Orphic Theogony. It assumes that the Orphic allusions allow the reading of Vulcan's necklace as constituting a poem charged with the language of Callimachean aesthetics and Orphic-influenced poetics. Statius's intertextual integration of the questioning of poetics into a standard topoi of ancient epic is said to have rendered description into a paradigmatic aspect of genre.
