- Abstract
Diabetes mellitus (DM) can influence patient oral health and quality of life (QoL). One of the oral complications of diabetes is periodontal disease, a chronic infection of teeth supporting tissues which is a major cause of tooth loss. DMF-T (number of decayed, missing of filled teeth) and the need of prosthesis are objective measurements of an individual oral health. The aim of this study was to examine the DMF-T and the need of prosthesis in patients with type 2 DM and the relationship between QoL and oral health. DM outpatients seen at the Universidade Federal do Ceará (northeast of Brazil) Diabetes Clinic were evaluated regarding their oral health profile and quality of life. The Medical Outcome Study Health Survey 36-Item Short Form (SF-36) was used to evaluate QL, while DMF-T and the need of prosthesis were used to evaluate oral health. Descriptive statistics and spearman test were used to describe the data and to evaluate the relationship between QoL and oral health (SPSS 13.0). A total of 99 patients (80 women, 19 men), with a mean age of 68.76±5.6 yr, and DM duration of 12.11±8.18 yr were evaluated. About half of them (52.5%) were on insulin therapy, and 55.3% of patients presented HbA[sub 1c]>7%. More than seventy percent (71%) presented DMF-T of 28, 19% needed superior prosthesis and 38% needed inferior prosthesis, but they didn't use it. There was no relationship between QoL and DMF-T (oral health) (rs= -0,042 p=0,683). Our data suggest a high frequency of poor oral health condition of elderly patients with type 2 diabetes of the northeast of Brazil, which seems to have no influence on their QoL.
