- Abstract
The article focuses on a study which assessed whether short-term preoperative radiotherapy is safe for treating rectal cancer. All study patients considered underwent surgery. All postoperative complications were also taken into account. Based from the results, no hospital death or postoperative mortality was recorded in the two groups. Also, postoperative morbidity was not significantly different in both groups. Potential advantages of a preoperative radiation approach are downstaging and downsizing effects. Neoadjuvant therapy may also be advantageous because sterilization of tumor cells before surgery may reduce the risk of tumor cell spillage during surgery.
