Public health: The toxic truth about sugar.
- Authors
Lustig, Robert H.; Schmidt, Laura A.; Brindis, Claire D.
- Abstract
The authors discuss the links between the increased consumption of sugar and the incidence of chronic diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, and cancer. The similarities between the health effects of food sugar and alcohol are explored, as well as social factors such as consumer availability and potential for abuse. It is argued that public health policy should be used to regulate sugar consumption through food taxation, distribution regulation, and age restrictions for food sales.
