- Abstract
Protecting and sustaining ecological environment includes a wide range of technical and strategic issues such as action plans, projects related to renewable energy sources, environmental organizations, public and local government models and environmental justice. The researches done in this field have determined that the most effective step that can be taken to protect ecological values is to determine the tools and policies that will take society into action in this regard. The quest for public policy in the name of continuation of environmental value has created new systems from sustainable communities to ecological citizenship that organize environmentally responsible behavior of societies. Communities, depending on their historical background and cultural characteristics, have behavioural patterns that differ in their protection of the natural environment they live in. For example Scandinavian countries have pioneered the emergence of models like eco-municipality, sustainable communities. The transformation of society towards building environmentally friendly society is increasing even in different approaches and speed. As scientific studies on how well-preserved natural areas, organic agriculture, and clean water resources contribute to human health are increasing, citizens are voluntarily becoming eco-citizens in order to preserve their health and their families' health. The main objective of this study is to investigate what societies can do to live and sustain ecological values. The characteristics and formations of sustainable communities have created the data source for the study. Within the scope of the study, sustainable communities' experiences on various scales and sample applications will be interpreted by literature review method.
