- Abstract
The aim of this paper is to study the relationship between the attendance of complementary curricular activities - music club - and the academic performance of students of the 2nd cycle of g~ basic education. A quasi-experimental study was conducted with 329 students from six schools in the •í¡ north coast of Portugal in the academic year of 2009/2010. The results indicated a positive relation- 's ship between the attendance of complementary curricular activities - music club - and the academic achievement of these students. This relationship is established not only with the subjects directly related to the Club area (Music) but also with core subjects, like Portuguese Language and Mathematics. The non-formal musical education in the national school system emerges as a prominent space in contemporary education, one which seems to give a definite contribution to the holistic development of the individual.
