- Abstract
Most studies of large social formations of people take the early to mid-nineteenth century as their starting point. In contrast to both, the proletariat, as it was presented by Karl Marx, became the name for the new industrialised and international working class of capitalist societies beyond national boundaries. Consumerism, nationalism and socialism are the three interconnected yet also conflicting social processes that refer to the three modern configuration of masses.
