- Abstract
Ten subjects were assessed using the vasoconstrictor assay technique in a double-blind study in order to evaluate the relative potencies of several diluted and undiluted proprietary corticosteroid preparations. As expected, Dermovate® ointment (clobetasol propionate 0.05%) achieved the highest mean score but there was no significant difference in the scores for Betnovate® ointment (betamethasone valerate 0.1%), Eumovate® ointment (clobetasone butyrate 0.05%), Synalar® forte cream (fluocinolone acetonide 0.2%) and Betnovate® ointment diluted extemporaneously one part in four in white soft paraffin (betamethasone valerate 0.025%). Furthermore, no significant difference in scores could be demonstrated between Synandone® ointment (fluocinolone acetonide 0.01%), a proprietary one part in four dilution of Betnovate® ointment, Synalar® ointment (fluocinolone acetonide 0.025%) and Synalar® ointment diluted one part in five and one part in ten in white soft paraffin (fluocinolone acetonide 0.005% and 0.0025% respectively). The relevance of these findings of these findings to clinical practice is discussed.
