- Abstract
Chagas disease, a parasitic infection, continues to be a major health issue in the Gran Chaco region of Argentina, Bolivia, and Paraguay. This region has high rates of vector infestation and infection, and is also one of the poorest areas in the world. Many patients with advanced Chagas cardiomyopathy require pacemakers, but lack the resources to obtain them. Pacemaker donation programs, local hospitals, and governments need to collaborate to address this unmet need. Pacemaker reuse programs have the potential to provide low-cost devices to impoverished patients with Chagas cardiomyopathy.
