- Abstract
The article focuses on vacuolated neutrophils in ethanol toxicity. Pathogenesis of the neutrophil cytoplasmic vacuolation was both phagocytosis of plasma and direct ethanol-induced mitochondrial damage. These effects on neutrophils have been reported in ultrastructural studies of rat neutrophils with autophagic vacuoles, changes in mitochondria such as swelling and disruption of cristae, as well as alterations to cytoplasmic granules. It is of note that in ethanol poisoning in man, vacuolation of early erythroid progenitors in the bone marrow is a more common manifestation.
