- Abstract
The objective of the article is to analyse how students enrolled in a social work program in the department of Antioquia (Colombia) perceive, conceive of and understand the field of sexual diversity and gender identity. Method and population: We designed an analytical and descriptive qualitative study deploying an online questionnaire that social work students from all semesters completed. The questionnaire included, as an additional tool, a free-association test that allowed us to analyse the social representations exhibited by students in relation to sexual diversity. Results and conclusion: Students had a basic knowledge of sexual and gender diversity. However, there was a strong presence of prejudices and stereotypes that might lead to discriminatory treatment of people with non-hegemonic sexual orientations and gender identities if said prejudices and conceptions are not counteracted by the professional training that social work students receive.
