- Abstract
IF the nervous system influences the activity of the anterior lobe of the pituitary gland by liberating some humoral excitant into the hypophysial portal vessels, which in turn transmit the substance to the gland1,2, then it would seem likely that these portal vessels would be widely distributed among the vertebrates. It is well known that in birds and some mammals (whale, sea-cow, Indian elephant, armadillo and porpoise) the neural lobe of the pituitary is separated from the pars distalis of the anterior lobe by a connective tissue septum, and it seemed possible that this septum might interrupt the path of the portal vessels in these animals.
