- Abstract
Among hair-dye allergens, phenylenediamine (PPD) is the most frequent sensitizer in hairdressers' clients. Researchers report a study in which contact sensitization to hairdressing allergens among hair-dressers' clients was detected in 18.7% of a group of 281 patients with contact dermatitis. A high rate of sensitization to PPD was detected in these patients, but contact sensitization to o-nitro-p-phenylenediamine (ONPPD) occurred in only 4.6% of patients. Researchers find a positive reaction to PPD in 19% of 104 patients, with ONPPD showing a 7.7% rate of sensitization.
