- Abstract
The article discusses the significance of Salmonella infection in fish reared in aquaria. Salmonella arizonae was isolated from visceral organs of the fish. The isolation of S. arizonue from various visceral organs and the histopathological observations in the present case indicate that the fish died of septicaemia. Since the pathogenicity of the isolate was not examined by experimental inoculation and a virological examination was not carried out, it was not clear that the isolate was a primary pathogen in pirarucu. However, it is supposed that the condition of the fish deteriorated as a result of S. arizonae infection. It appears that healthy pirarucu do not harbor S. arizoriae, since the bacteria were not isolated from the visceral organs or intestinal tract of a pirarucu which died from an accident one year later in the same aquarium.
