- Abstract
The article discusses the effort to identify susceptibility loci for bipolar affective disorder (BIP) which is one of the most common mental illnesses that implicates through genetic linkage studies. It examines the role of Mendelian subtypes of BIP wherein a genetic variant is inherited from a common ancestor. It also details the use of genome-wide association (GWA) to gain insight into the functional consequences of genetic variation influencing disease risk.
